Summer Reading Assignment: Dodger

Entry 1:

The book that I read over the summer was Dodger By Terry Pratchett. All though the book has many characters in it the main character is guy that lives in London named Jack Dodger. Dodger is a Toshe (which is someone that lives in the sewer looking for money and other kinds of treasure). One rainy and stormy night, Dodger sees a screaming women get thrown out of a carriage. Then two men jump out of the carriage to get her but Dodger scares them off. Then, Dodger takes the woman (Simplicity) to a neighbor's house where she will be safe. Dodger learns that Simplicity is a princess from England and is married to a royal family member from another country. The conflict of the story is that Simplicity's husband wants to take her back to his country but she does not want to go with him because he is abusive. Meanwhile Dodger is stuck in the middle of it. What will Dodger do to save Simplicity from her Abusive Husband. This book is a little bit like Romeo and Juliet. The Princess doesn't want to be married to her husband just like Romeo and Juliet's families don't want them to be married to each other.

Entry 2:

There are two major characters in Dodger, Jack Dodger and Simplicity, a princess. Dodger is a very independent person at the start of the book. He is always crawling around in the sewer. He didn't have a family growing up, he was an orphan, who was constantly picked on by the other kids. He got the name Dodger by quickly avoiding the punches and kicks from the other orphans. Dodger is also a risk taker. In the begging he sees a screaming woman get thrown out of a carriage and he sees two men jump after her. Instead of running away he scares off the men. The men could have easily turned on him but Dodger took the risk anyways. Simplicity is the other main character. In the beginning not much is known about Simplicity. She is very mysterious. Later in the book we know that Simplicity wants to get away from her abusive husband and wants to stay with Dodger in London. Dodger has a theme of freedom. Simplicity wants to run away and be free from her husband. The book is structured with a big event happening first with little events in the middle leading up to one final big event.

Entry 3:

"A fancy two-horse coach wallowed its way along the street, some piece of metal stuck near an axle causing it to be heralded by a scream. And indeed there was a scream, a human scream this time, as the coach door was flung open and a figure tumbled out into the gushing gutter, which tonight was doing the job of a fountain. Two other figures sprang from the coach, cursing in language that was as colorful as the night was dark and even dirtier. In the downpour, fitfully lit but the first figure tried to escape but tripped, fell, and was leaped upon." This is at the beginning of the book when Simplicity is thrown out of the carriage and then Dodger scares them off. This was at the very beginning of the book and it instantly hooked me. Whenever some action is at the beginning of the book I think it will instantly hook the reader like it hooked me. Since I didn't know exactly what was going on in the book it made me want to read more. I think because of all of the action and the drama it made this a good hook to the beginning of the book causing me to want to read more.

Entry 4:

I choose this book because it was based back in London around the 1800s. When I was looking at it I thought this book was going be about history back in London in the 1800s but it turned out to be an action and an adventure book. I really liked this book from the beginning. It was very engaging from the first page because there was a lot of action and you didn't know if there was a kidnapping or if someone was trying to get away from someone. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a book with a lot of action and adventure in it, it is full of it. There was never a point in the book that was boring and made me want to put it down. I would also like to recommend this book to people who like spy books. Dodger eventually becomes a spy because of all of the things that he does in the book which catches the eye of the Police and the government. I really don't like to read a lot but this book always made me want to pick it up again and it was a really fun and enjoyable read.

Reflection

Reflection of Krista Ramsey Blog

The blog that I want to reflect on is the Krisita Ramsey blog that I did. I felt like I did a really good job on that one. I think I did a great job on explaining why the character ( T.Y. Hilton). I explained why he was a good person and some of the things that he does that makes him a good person.  "His heart-on-his-sleeve love for his daughter,". This is a quote that i used to describe T.Y. Hilton also and it describes him as a good person who loves his daughter. I also analyzed syntax in this article. I analyzed "BS commentator Bart Scott-himself a former football player and a dad-had it right when he said..." and explained the syntax in it (the senence uses lots of colons in it mwhich makes it syntax).

Farenheit 451 blog post

The book I have been reading lately is Fahrenheit 451. I think this is a very interesting book. It is a science fiction book that is set in the future. Its main character Montag is a firefighter. He doesn't do what a firefighter these days do now though.  Instead of putting out fires he starts fires y burning books. He doesn't really know why he burns them. He just does as he is told. One day he meets a girl named Clairisse who talks with him about the government. She is very curios about the government and likes to question it. Montag then starts to question the government and why he is burning the books. then he finally learns that he is burning the books because they have knowledge. How far will Montag go before he gets caught.

Book I have been reading

I have been reading the book Baseball's 6th Tool by John D. Curtis.this book talks about baseball and the mental side of the game. It is nice to read a book like this because a lot of books just talk about the physical side of sports and not the mental side. This book is called Baseball's 6th Tool because the 6th tool in baseball is the mental side. I would recommend this book to anyone who plays baseball or to anyone who plays sports in general. It is a very good book on the mental side in sports.

Book I'm Reading

The book that I am choosing to read is baseball's 6th tool. I chose to read this book because I am currently on the baseball team and this book obviously talks about baseball. I wanted to read this book because it talks about the mental side of the game not just the physical play.

Satire hw

This was an example of satire that I found. It is sarcastic. It is a parody of the goldilocks story. It is saying that instead of godlilocks going into the bear's house it is showing her checking her email on their computer.

Krista Ramsey blog

Today I read T.Y. Hilton is a good player, great dad  by Krista Ramsey. This article was about a football player that cares about his family and football instead of getting into trouble. The line that I think is the best written is "But it was Hilton's vulnerability, his heart-on-his-sleeve love for his daughter, that made a nation of boisterous football fans stop their partying and take notice." I think this was the best line because it gets the author's point across to the reader. this sentence also has a lot of diction like the words "boisterous" and "vulnerability". It also has good syntax like "his heart-on-his-sleeve." Instead of just saying "his heart on his sleeve," she puts hyphens in the middle. Ramsey likes to put a lot of diction in her articles. In the article For better vision, kids need time outdoors She uses strong diction like "sauntering" "prevalence" and "nearsightedness." In the article T.Y. Hilton is a good player, great dad she uses words like "vulnerability" and "boisterous." Finally in the article  Super Bowl QBs score points for great style she includes words like "elegant" and "adamant". Ramsey also includes syntax in her articles. An example of syntax in  T.Y. Hilton is a good player, great dad is "BS commentator Bart Scott-himself a former football player and a dad-had it right when he said..." An example in For better vision, kids need time outdoors she says "sauntering to his car-continually hunched over his smartphone or iPad." Finally in Super Bowl QBs score points for great style, she uses syntax like ""something of an event-dinner at a nice restaurant."

Three questions I would like to ask Krista Ramsey is,

  1. How do you get the ideas that you write about?
  2. Why do you like to add so much diction and syntax in your writing?
  3. How did your career in writing start?
